Re:My Latest Venture Date Posted:06/07/2017 6:51 PMCopy HTML I may have to try a Mac sometime, but right now I'm having fun playing with these old Windows machines. (Well, there is one I use for serious things but the others are my toys).
P.E.T.A (People Eating Tasty Animals) I'm deplorable and proud of it.

Re:My Latest Venture Date Posted:06/07/2017 8:05 PMCopy HTML The new iMac is pricey, but it should have excellent performance. The older PowerPC/RISC based Macs held some surprises also. A few years ago I had a friend who worked at the local recycling center, and people would bring in all kinds of stuff that still had some useful life left in it and they'd line them up by the building until the end of the day so anyone who wanted them could get them. One day this guy brought in a Power Mac (the older desktop style with handles on the corners) and my friend grabbed it and set it inside the building.
When I came by for a visit later on he hooked it up to an old monitor he had laying around and we tinkered with it a bit. We found it to have pretty impressive performance, especially considering it had a 200 MHz CPU. That's right, 200 MHz. It played DVD movies as well as a Windows machine with a much faster CPU. I'd seen Windows machines play DVD movies with 500 MHz CPUs, but they couldn't do much of anything else at the time. I don't recall ever seeing a Win machine with a 200 MHz CPU that could play a DVD movie. Of course, the PowerPC CPU and the Pentium II/III CPU were completely different architectures, but still the performance gap at the time was amazing. DR |

Re:My Latest Venture Date Posted:06/08/2017 2:22 PMCopy HTML Sure glad you got a refurbished unit...I'm amazed at the price of a new one...
Is Apple's new iMac Pro, with a starting price at $4,999, overpriced? Just how overpriced is Apple's new iMac Pro?I feel more like I do now than I did a while ago...

Re:My Latest Venture Date Posted:06/08/2017 2:51 PMCopy HTML As My X used to say,,,,,,"You get what you pay for!" That is usually the case,,, The one you mentioned is way out of most people league. Not common I Mac...... not a good comparison to what most people get....

Re:My Latest Venture Date Posted:06/08/2017 10:28 PMCopy HTML The new $5K iMac Pro also is the first foray Apple has made into making their computers non-upgradeable like their other iThings. The RAM is soldered to the motherboard, as is the discrete graphics card.

Re:My Latest Venture Date Posted:06/09/2017 1:50 PMCopy HTML So happy for you Ms. Queen ! You know what your talking about and was a big help for me when I bought my Mac for Xmas.
I took out the 3 yr warranty on mine and had them to put in that gizmo that jacked up the speed that makes it start faster. Bought the DVD do dad and the memory card picture thingy. Had the fellow to come out and set it up for me with all that first time stuff, questions, etc. Sure is a joy not to be afraid to turn on your pc and on rare occasion just see '1 update' available instead of the blue screen of death and what all updates Windows has installed that you don't want or need either one. Everything is for the gamers. I could care less about gaming why should I give up a lot of space for that 'stuff'. LOL Bet you'll never leave your chair now. LOL Hey girl get up and walk every now and again or you'll get a blood clot LOL Congrats ! |

Re:My Latest Venture Date Posted:06/13/2017 12:33 PMCopy HTML So happy your loving' it ! We all deserve to treat ourselves. LOL
So hot in Tx right now we're all boiling. Because of high electric bills we don't turn our a/c on till 2 and let it run till 9 until then we got big commercial fans running. One is against the patio screen door the only door that has a screen in it. Can't open windows for the flying dirt. One person who lives in New Mexico told me about evaporative coolers, but, it would cost a fortune to install , then, you have to have them come back and change filters, etc. He's getting ready to retire yr or so and don't want any more expense. We don't have water bills since we're on well, so, that's good, Tx. gas is cheap, just the electric that kills you. Gonna be in the 100's most of this week. |

Re:My Latest Venture Date Posted:06/14/2017 12:46 AMCopy HTML The heat and humidity are just beginning to get cranked up here in SC... I went out around 3 PM to do some errand running and it was 94. Sometimes I wish we could use evaporative coolers here, since electricity is fairly expensive ($0.11/kWh), but the summer humidity would render them all but useless.
I expect us to have some 100 degree days ahead, but TX seems to get stuck in it and bake for extended periods. Stay cool however you can manage, Sharkky... DR |

Re:My Latest Venture Date Posted:06/14/2017 1:32 PMCopy HTML yeah, but, that humidity in the South would stagger a buffalo.
You really can't win. I was talking to somebody and she said it was 33' where she was !!!!!!! I go "where U at , Siberia"? she said 7000 ft up in either Montana or Wyoming can't remember which in the mountains It was 61 in her house. Husband wouldn't let her turn on the heat. LOL I go 'dang' something like that. LOL You can't freakin' win can you. Either we poor saps in Tx., or high humidity that makes you gurgle when you talk and your hair turns into a kinky curly mess, that poor chick freezing her wazoo off in June, no less. I hate to see the winters. Mountain goat might be able to survive. I was out watering at 6:30 now I got to get on my recumbent bike before it gets above 80 in the house. never ends around here. No rain predicted for June at all. |
