I feel more like I do now than I did a while ago...

Re:Ubuntu forums hacked; 1.82M logins, email addresses stolen Date Posted:07/24/2013 1:30 AMCopy HTML Sounds like quite a mess -- I understand the passwords were hashed, but if they are alphanumeric passwords shorter than 8 characters, the hash used could be cracked by a couple of Nvidia Tesla graphics cards (latest CUDA engine) running as mathematics processors within 48 hours. I was thinking about experimenting with Teslas as encryption/cracking engines before I got blindsided by both health and economic problems...
My Ubuntu Forums password will get changed in short order. I also probably should change my Launchpad password too. Canonical (and everyone else) must remain vigilant, since now there are not only malicious individuals out there but a number of state -sponsored hacking operations (China, N Korea, Russia, for a start) out there. The Internet is still the Wild West. DR |

Re:Ubuntu forums hacked; 1.82M logins, email addresses stolen Date Posted:07/24/2013 1:25 PMCopy HTML Here is a copy of the e-mail I got from Ubuntu.
Hello, You are receiving this message because you have an account registered with this address on ubuntuforums.org. The Ubuntu forums software was compromised by an external attacker. As a result, the attacker has gained access to read your username, email address and an encrypted copy of your password from the forum database. If you have used this password and email address to authenticate at any other website, you are urged to reset the password on those accounts immediately as the attacker may be able to use the compromised personal information to access these other accounts. It is important to have a distinct password for different accounts. The ubuntuforums.org website is currently offline and we are working to restore this service. Please take the time to change your ubuntuforums.org account password when service is restored. We apologize for any inconvenience to the Ubuntu community, thank you for your understanding. The Canonical Sysadmins. For the man who thinks he is free, there is no escape.
Wayne Collier.
